How to avoid a 3G breakdown on the road in 2022
All major data network carriers are “sunsetting” their 3G networks. The first 3G shutdown was in February, 2022, and other major networks will soon follow. By the end of 2022, all 3G networks will be terminated, meaning any device in a truck using 3G will be rendered inoperable. Some of the impacted devices include: SmartLINQ, TruckTech+, OTA updates, and Electronic Logging Devices (ELD). More details and effected devices will be released in the future.
Your first step in avoiding issues during a breakdown due to this technology change is to identify any of your devices that currently utilize the 3G network.
Newer devices will likely not be affected. The good news is if you have purchased a truck or device in the past couple of years, the chances are pretty strong they are compatible with the newer 4G and 5G networks. Older trucks are more likely to contain a device that will not function properly after the 3G shutdown. Putting off reviewing your tech could place you at risk for frustration with your during a breakdown this upcoming year.
We advise you to identify the network your tech operates on and if it will be affected this change. As always, CIT Trucks is here to help. You can contact us for more information about affected devices and our staff will be glad to provide you with options on replacing the old tech. Newer devices designed for 4G/5G networks offer more robust communication features, faster upload and download speeds, and more.

Preparing for the 3g shutdown
Affordable options are available as replacements for older tech once identified. Trimble
International Gateway (TIG) is one viable option to replacing PMG.
· A 4G “puck style” antenna is available as a replacement for the 3G antenna but is NOT required for use with TIG.
· A replacement 4G antenna is suggested to improve data connectivity if experiencing service degradation with a 3G antenna.
