The All New 2018 Isuzu FTR

Isuzu Commercial Truck of America, Inc. announced specifications of the all-new entry in the Class 6 medium-duty truck segment: the 2018 Isuzu FTR.

A number of Isuzu executives came from Japan to attend NTEA’s 2016 World Truck Show for the announcement.

According to Isuzu, the F-Series truck will go into production in the United States in mid-2017. Some of the FTR’s highlights include:

•    25,950 lbs. GVWR
•    Available in eight wheelbase lengths ranging from 152 to 248 in., accommodating bodies from 14 to 30 ft. long
•    Dock height Class 6 truck
•    A turbocharged Isuzu 5.2-liter 4HK1-TC engine
•    The engine will be mated to an Allison six-speed automatic transmission with power take-off (PTO) capability
•    Dana axles will have capacities of 12,000 lbs. up front and 19,000 lbs. rear suspension
•    Bridgestone or Continental 11R22.5 tires will be fitted to 22.5 in. × 25 in. steel wheels

The FTR will be powered by Isuzu's 4HK1-TC 5.2L turbocharged four-cyl. diesel engine, a first in the segment. Horsepower and torque ratings have not been finalized, but the company notes that the 4HK1 engine "is well known for its high torque output." The new truck will get an Allison 2000 Series automatic transmission and the engine will have a B10 durability of 310,000 miles, meaning that 90% of engines should reach that mileage before requiring an overhaul.
