Passengers in Large Commercial Trucks Now Required to Wear Seat Belts

Effective August 8, 2016, passengers riding in large commercial trucks will be required to use seat belts whenever the vehicles are operated on public roads in interstate commerce. The U.S Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) final rule revises their regulations and holds motor carriers and drivers responsible for ensuring their passengers safety.

37 passengers traveling unrestrained in the cab of a large truck were killed in roadway crashes in 2014, and about one-third of this number were ejected from the truck cab, according to the most recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

FMCSA already requires drivers to use their seat belts; however, the FMCSRs were previously lax on the use of seat belts by passengers in trucks. Due to the requirements of 49 CFR 392.60, which prohibits the transportation of anyone without specific written authorization from the carrier, the motor carrier has knowledge of each passenger so they can easily require that they buckle up.

“Using a seat belt is one of the safest, easiest, and smartest choices drivers and passengers can make before starting out on any road trip,” said FMCSA Acting Administrator Scott Darling. “This rule further protects large truck occupants and will undoubtedly save more lives.”
